Dr. Eric Tutu Tchao

Dr. Eric Tutu Tchao is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana. He earned his Ph.D. in Telecommunications Engineering from KNUST in 2015, following his Bachelor's degree in the same field in 2010. His doctoral work on "Analysis of MIMO Antenna Configuration Effects on WiMAX Networks Deployments" laid the groundwork for his subsequent research in wireless communication and digital infrastructure.
Dr. Tchao plays a central role in digital innovation and applied AI research at KNUST. He serves as the Scientific Director of the Distributed IoT Platforms, Privacy and Edge-Intelligence Research (DIPPER) Lab and as Partnership Coordinator at the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL), where he also leads the AI in Agriculture thematic area. Additionally, he is the Research Theme Lead for Digital Development Technologies under the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP), part of the World Bank's ACE Impact initiative.
He is also a Fellow of the Brew-Hammond Energy Centre and the Team Lead of the KNUST High-Performance Computing User Group, contributing to infrastructure for cutting-edge computational research.
As Executive Director of AINAS, Dr. Tchao provides strategic and operational leadership for initiatives promoting responsible AI, digital transformation, and local capacity building across African communities.
His research focuses on:
- Blockchain and IoT systems optimization
- AI for Development (AI4D), especially in agriculture
- ICT4D and technology transfer for local innovation
- Wireless communication networks
- Mobile health (mHealth) systems
- Renewable energy and smart grid deployments
He is also a recipient of the TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship and a DFG Scholar, and was awarded the KNUST-MTN Ghana Research Innovation Grant in 2015.
Dr. Tchao is a member of multiple professional bodies, including IEEE Communications Society, The Internet Society, IETF Working Group on IP over IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX), Ghana Institution of Engineers, serving on its Research and Awards Committee
His institutional service includes roles such as Exams Officer, Curriculum Committee Member, and Procurement Head at the departmental and faculty levels. He also moderates Computer Engineering programs at Ghana Technology University College and supervises undergraduate research projects.
Dr. Tchao has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal and conference publications and serves as a reviewer for the International Journal of Communication Systems (Wiley). His work fosters interdisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry, particularly in agri-tech and digital infrastructure in Africa.
